Google and Doubleclick taking over the world
Slightly exciting news.
Just been listening to the conference call.
Most interesting was the lack of an answer from Sergey Brin to a question about if Google would make display adverts relevant to people's search behaviour. That'll be a good test of how seriously Google takes privacy.
Also, they say that they'll only look to deal with the issues surrounding Performics (DART search) after the deal closes. They think the deal will only close at 'year end' which is quite a way away.
Google have only just filed the merger with the antitrust departments in the US. I suspect this deal may run into some problems.
It'll be interesting to see what happens to Doubleclick. I would be concerned about data security if I was a media owner - would Google be sneakily using it to target their own ads? There's no easy way of telling, their automated systems don't leave traces - you can't see what they're doing.
